Psychiatry is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental illnesses using medication prescribed by a doctor.
Psychology is the study of human behaviour and thought processes, it too is diagnostic and offers manualised treatments.
Counselling typically focuses on providing guidance and support to individuals dealing with specific problems or life challenges.
Psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy which aims to collaboratively devise interventions that support individuals, couples and families to explore and address issues in a safe and supportive environment.
While each field has its own unique approach, they all share the common goal of supporting individuals on their journey towards emotional wellbeing. Several studies show that the key determining factor of growth and healing is the quality of the therapeutic relationship.
The relationship with a psychotherapist is collaborative and relational, as opposed to an expert diagnosing you and telling you what to do. Whilst that approach is necessary in some instances, psychotherapy offers a personalised and collaborative approach to mental and emotional health, focusing on individuals' unique experiences and relational patterns.
By empowering individuals to address underlying issues and break free from negative patterns, psychotherapy facilitates personal growth and healing on a deep sustaining level, emphasising the importance of the quality of the therapeutic relationship in facilitating growth and healing.

Psychotherapy is valuable for personal growth, self-exploration, and improving all relationships, regardless of having a major problem. Sessions typically start weekly or fortnightly and can be spaced out as progress is made.
The duration of therapy is individualised and based on your specific needs, the complexity of the issue, and your commitment to the process.
For singular concerns, 8-12 weeks may suffice. I recommend committing to 8 sessions to see lasting change. However, if you seek to address long-standing patterns and deeper issues and comorbidities impacting your functioning, a longer-term commitment to treatment would be more beneficial.
